Title: Why I Passed on a Big-Company Buyout for My App
Earlier this year, I launched a small mobile app that began to gain organic traction in a niche I created. Out of nowhere, a mid-sized company in the field offered $50,000 to acquire the app outright—no equity, no revenue share, just a straight buyout.
It was more money than I’d ever been offered for anything I’d built. Yet I said no.
I’ve spent years building solo projects, and this is the first one that truly felt like it had “the it factor.” I’m not even sure what exactly that is. Maybe it’s simply the first time I’ve felt genuine passion for a project. But walking away from that offer has left me questioning myself: am I being principled, or did I make a mistake?
I’d love to hear from others who’ve turned down buyout offers. How do you decide when to cash out versus go all in? What factors helped you arrive at your decision?
For context, I’m not asking for feedback on the app, nor am I seeking users or a broader critique. I’m looking to learn from peers who’ve faced similar crossroads and understand how they navigated the choice.
